Aleppo is one the most ancients city in the world. It seems that the name of Halap was found in Hittits text dating from 20th century BC. Between Aleppo and Damascus, there is a big rivality : which city is inhabited for the longest period. It's why it's so difficult to give historical information about Aleppo. I found this city more "commercial" than Damascas. The main business partners seems to come from the former USSR. Many communities live in Aleppo : Kurds, Armenians, catholic Greeks...
