Apamea was founded by Seleucos, a general of Alexander the Great and became an important provincial centre and a military base. After, the aera was under control of the Romans, Byzantines and Persians. At the end, Apamea was forgotten.

Since 1933, Belgian teams work on the site. This is one of the most prolonged and consistent programs of archeological works carried out in Syria.
