Palmyra (Tadmor)
variants : Palmyra - Tadmor - Tadmour - la Rome de l'Orient

Palmyra or the fabulous city of Queen Zenobia who defied Rome (a very bad idea).

Parlmyra was a major step on the Silk Road. Caravan found here all necessary stuff after a exteneous walk in the desert. And so, Palmyra become very rich.

Today (September 2003), Palmyra is twice a dead city. We have the old city with ruins and the modern town with a lot of hotels... empty hotels. Very few people still dare to travel in this marvellous region. Before September 11, 2001, quite 2.500 people visited daily the site, today, with 150, they are happy. Close to Palmyra, they are a jail with a lot of political prisonner.
