Umm Qais was, like Jerash, a city of the Decapolis (a Roman group of ten cities). A this time, the city was called Gadara. The town was located on a commercial road beteen Syria and Palestine. There were a lot of artists, writers and philosophers.
In 1806, a German traveller (Ulrich Seetzen) discovered the city.
Today, Umm Qais is located at a strategic crossroad between Syria and Israël. You can seen Tibériade Lake and Golan Heights. Most of the tourists don't come here to admire the old city but to look at their former land...
