This monastery, the most important of Karabakh - is dedicated with to Saint-John the Baptist. It's in this part of Karabakh that we can find the most important exemples of medieval Armenian architecture. The isolation of the place was the best protection against Seljuk and Mongol invasions. The monastery was founded in 1216, the church in 1232-1238.
